"Miles Apart Yet Together" - Secondary School Mainland Exchange Program 2023/24 (Enrichment Edition) R7: Environmental Conservation, Technology, and Maritime Silk Road Exploration Tour in Hainan Province (Five Days)

From April 21 to 25, 2024, students from Sacred Heart Canossian College participated in a five-day academic tour organized by the Education Bureau, focusing on environmental conservation, technological innovation, and the strategic significance of Hainan as a key node in the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. The tour aimed to deepen students' understanding of local environmental protection efforts, technological advancements, and to inspire their innovative spirit, while also enhancing their knowledge of Hainan's culture and history.



Day 1: Haikou's Historical and Modern Face

Students gathered at Hong Kong International Airport in the morning and flew to Haikou, the capital of Hainan Province. Their first stop was Qilou Old Street, a historic district with strong Southeast Asian influences, where they learned about Hainan Island's historical changes and unique architectural styles.

Day 2: Insights into Hainan University and Free Trade Port

The day began with a visit to Hainan University, where students attended a special lecture on the development of China’s Free Trade Port, gaining insights into the policy background, development strategies, and its role in regional economic growth. In the afternoon, the group visited Maple Leaf International School Hainan, discussing how its educational model integrates international perspectives to cultivate students' global competitiveness.

Day 3: On-Site Investigation of Environmental Technologies

The morning began with a visit to Huaneng Wind Power Plant and Chaotanbi Wind Farm, where students learned about renewable energy technologies and their applications, discussing their contributions to environmental protection. After lunch, they visited the Wenchang Space Science Center, where they learned about China's space exploration achievements, experienced the wonders of space technology, and participated in interactive exhibits.

Day 4: Deep Experience of Natural Conservation and Culture

The day's activities began at Meishe River Fengxiang Wetland Park in Haikou, where students learned about wetland ecosystem protection and its importance. In the afternoon, they visited the Hainan Provincial Museum to deepen their understanding of Hainan's natural history and cultural heritage. The day concluded with a visit to the Feng Xiaogang Film Commune, where students learned about the innovation and development of the local film industry.

Day 5: Exploration of Technological Innovation

The final day focused on a visit to Hainan Jinpan Smart Technology Co., Ltd., a globally influential company in the information technology sector. Students learned about the company's research and development processes, witnessing how technology drives local economic growth.

This exploration tour of Hainan provided students with a comprehensive understanding of the province's efforts in environmental conservation, technological innovation, and its strategic role in the Maritime Silk Road. Students not only gained a wealth of scientific knowledge but also deepened their understanding of environmental protection and resource security, inspiring their interest in future technological innovation and fostering their innovative thinking and problem-solving abilities.
