Germany-France-Switzerland Historical Cities Junior Diplomat Program 2024

    Between July 29 and August 9, students and teachers from Tsuen Wan Government Secondary School embarked on a Germany-France-Switzerland Historical Cities Junior Diplomat Program, designed to broaden students' international outlook and inspire them academically and professionally across multiple disciplines.

    Day 1:

    The group gathered at the airport and boarded a flight to Frankfurt, Germany. During the long flight, students learned how to adjust to the time difference and manage themselves during travel, an important step in developing independent living skills.

    Day 2:

    Upon arrival, the group strolled along the Main River, soaking in the historic charm of Frankfurt. They visited the Römer Square, city hall, and iconic churches, experiencing historical landmarks. In the afternoon, students visited the Chinese Consulate in Frankfurt, where they engaged with diplomats to learn about the responsibilities and duties in international relations. A visit to the Frankfurt Stock Exchange introduced them to the financial markets, sparking interest in economics and finance.

    Day 3:

    In Freiburg, students discovered the city's green and sustainable initiatives. Hosted by the Freiburg City Government, they learned about local governance. They later visited the UNESCO World Heritage site Vauban Fortress, which ignited interest in engineering and architecture through its historical military defense system.

    Day 4:

    Guided by Freiburg's Economic Promotion Bureau, students gained insight into cultural differences between China and Germany. Later, they visited the University of Freiburg, where they engaged with Chinese student representatives, deepening their understanding of German higher education. The day concluded with hands-on workshops in a local museum, enhancing their understanding of history, art, and natural sciences through interactive projects.

    Day 5:

    Accompanied by forestry experts, the group explored Black Forest conservation efforts, learning about environmental sustainability. At the German Pioneering Media and Technology Center, students participated in robotics programming workshops, expanding their knowledge of robotics and fostering a forward-looking, international perspective on technology.

    Day 6:

    Students immersed themselves in traditional German crafts and folk culture at a Black Forest farmhouse, even making butter by hand. This experience of traditional craftsmanship taught them patience and the value of precision, while introducing them to Germany's rich heritage.

    Day 7:

    Traveling to Lucerne, Switzerland, students learned about Swiss history, governance, and the legacy of William Tell. They toured the well-preserved ancient city walls, the Chapel Bridge, and the Lion Monument, gaining a vivid understanding of Swiss culture and history.

    Day 8:

    In Zurich, students explored the world of finance, visiting Zurich Lake and touring historical architecture such as Zurich Cathedral. At the renowned ETH Zurich and Zurich University, they participated in a Model United Nations workshop, which honed their diplomacy skills, team spirit, and leadership abilities.

    Day 9:

    The day included a scenic tour of Lake Constance and a visit to Munich’s Marienplatz and the Bavarian royal palace, introducing students to Bavarian culture and enriching their understanding of Europe's diverse cultural landscape.

    Day 10:

    Students traveled to Heidelberg to visit Heidelberg University, Germany's oldest, and explored Heidelberg Castle, absorbing the beauty of its historic setting. They also visited the Church of the Holy Spirit, rounding out their exploration of Germany's deep cultural roots.



    Days 11 & 12:

    On the way back to Hong Kong, students reflected on their journey, summarizing the knowledge and experiences gained. They prepared to apply these valuable lessons in their future academic and professional careers.


    This 12-day exploration provided students with cross-disciplinary knowledge, from in-depth historical insights to cutting-edge technological experiences. The program helped develop their environmental awareness and global perspective, while providing practical insights for their future studies and careers.
